ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nola Anderson scored 17 points and Sinclair Russell added 13 as the Oakland women's basketball team (8-8, 2-1 HL) dropped its first Horizon League game of the season to UIC (12-5, 2-2 HL), 75-60, Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'rena.
Anderson collected her fifth-straight double-figure scoring game with three 3-pointers to lead the Golden Grizzlies. Russell tallied her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season, while Olivia Nash added 11 points. Elena Popkey recorded nine assists, eight points and seven steals.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed by 10 at the half, but fell behind by as many as 21 in the second period, until they cut the lead to single digits with six minutes remaining. Oakland used a 14-2 run to make the score 61-53 as they hit five-straight shots from behind the arc with Anderson nailing three of the triples. The Flames would however go on to score eight unanswered points to secure the win.
UIC was led by Ruvanna Campbell with 21 points and 24 rebounds for her league best 12th double-double of the season. Terri Bender added 19 points.
The Golden Grizzlies will be on the road on Thursday when they prepare to take on the University of Detroit Mercy in a rivalry game and look to earn two points in the Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation.
