ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nola Anderson and Olivia Nash each tallied 23 points to lead the Oakland women's basketball team (7-7, 1-0 HL) to a 89-56 win over Milwaukee (5-9, 1-1 HL) in its Horizon League opener on Saturday morning inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies shot a season-high 55 percent from the field.
Anderson's 23 points is a career-high as she hit a career-best five 3-pointers, while Nash collected her third 20-point performance of the season. Sinclair Russell tallied just her second career double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, both career-highs. Elena Popkey added 16 points on four 3-pointers to go along with eight assists.
Oakland outscored Milwaukee 50-30 in the second half as the Golden Grizzlies shot 63 percent (17-27) from the floor. Oakland opened the half scoring on its first five possessions to take an 18 point lead. Nash scored 18 points in the period on 7-of-10 shooting and Russell grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies grabbed a 39-26 lead at half after Anderson hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to take the 13-point advantage into the locker room. Oakland used a 13-2 run in the middle of the period, led by eight points by Anderson, to go up 22-14 and did not trail the rest of the game.
UWM's Ashley Green, the league's second leading scorer, tallied 12 points and Jaleesa Armstrong added 11 points. The Panthers shot 31.6 percent from the field but just 17.2 percent from behind the arc.
Oakland will return to the court on Thursday as they travel to Valparaiso for its first Horizon League road contest of the season beginning at 8:05 p.m. ET.
