COLUMBIA, Mo. - Sophomore Melissa Deatsch reached double figures in kills in both of Oakland's matches Friday at the University of Missouri's Tiger Invitational, but the Golden Grizzlies (2-4) came up short in contests against Illinois State and Xavier. Illinois State defeated Oakland 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, while Xavier bested the Golden Grizzlies 25-11, 25-19, 25-18.

"Both Illinois State and Xavier are outstanding teams," Oakland head coach Rob Beam said. "They competed well and exposed areas that we need to improve. We will take these matches as learning opportunities to improve in our training, as well as for tomorrow's contests."

Against Illinois State, a strong second set by Oakland pulled the match even at one set apiece. But Illinois State (3-1) held Oakland to a .116 attack percentage in four sets to take the win. Deatsch tallied 15 kills, while Sammy Condon added eight. Ciara Schultz had 38 assists, while Taylor Humm led the Golden Grizzlies with 12 digs.

In the evening matchup against Xavier (4-0), Oakland got 11 kills from Deatsch, who hit .391 in the three-set match. Schultz tallied 20 assists and seven digs to lead Oakland in those categories.

The Golden Grizzlies conclude the two-day event Saturday when Oakland faces Lipscomb at 10 a.m. and the host Missouri Tigers at 2 p.m.
