ROCHESTER, Mich. - Cassie Pelloni tallied a match-high 21 kills Saturday afternoon as Oakland defeated Robert Morris 25-14, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19 in the second round of action at the 2014 Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
Pelloni, who had eight kills during the second set to help key a rally late for the Golden Grizzlies, hit .462 in the match. Bolstering Oakland's attack was a 17-kill effort by
Melissa Deatsch, while
Jessica Dood added 10 kills in the win.
The victory, Oakland's sixth consecutive win of the season, sets up the Golden Grizzlies for a chance to claim their own tournament's title against UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
"I think it's going to be a real showcase between two really strong mid-major schools," Oakland head coach
Rob Beam said. "These are two teams that will compete for championships this year, and it's really great to play a match like this for homecoming weekend."
Ciara Schultz handed out 50 assists to guide Oakland's attack. Defensively,
Taylor Humm had a team-high 15 digs, while
Melissa Deatsch added 13 to complete her double-double.
After Robert Morris (1-11) claimed the third set, Oakland ended the fourth set with a decisive 9-2 run, aided by five consecutive serves by
Sammy Condon.
UC Irvine 3, Bowling Green 0 UC Irvine (9-4) received double-digit kills from Marisa Bubica (13), Allison Lee (11) and Cassidy Pickrell (11) to defeat Bowling Green (2-9) in Saturday's opener, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22. Trailing 20-15 in the third, the Anteaters went on a 10-2 run to end the set.
Bowling Green will take on Robert Morris at 5 p.m. Saturday evening before Oakland hosts UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m.
