Aug. 22, 2014

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Brianne Horne and Vlad Gurovski each had a shot on goal, while Alison Holland made four saves as Oakland fell in its season opener at Western Michigan,4-0, in women's soccer action on Friday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Golden Grizzlies trailed 11-2 in shots on goal during the contest.

"We did not play our best today," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "We knew we cannot come out and play against this strong Western Michigan team and expect to win unless we give our best. We had a couple of half chances but did not create chances to cause any real threat to Western. We need to learn from this experience and move on. Coaches and players will focus our attention on our next game and prepare for that."

The Broncos would get their first goal in the 25th minute as Diana Dedvukaj scored from the right side of the box past the keeper to the upper-right corner of the net. WMU added to its lead in the 37th minute on a corner kick from Dedvukaj that was headed in by Liz Abro. In the final minute of the first half Western Michigan was able to push its lead to 3-0 as a through ball by Olivia Vollmers was slotted into the left corner by Emma Kahn.

Horne would have a scoring chance in the 58th minute as she took a good shot on goal but was saved by Kaitlyn Collin. In the 77th minute, Gurovski would fire a shot but was once again stopped by Collin to keep the Golden Grizzlies off the scoreboard.

Holland played the second half in goal for Oakland and made four saves while allowing one goal, while Stephanie Bukovec made three stops in the first period.

Oakland will be back on the field Sunday as they take on Notre Dame beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
