ROCHESTER, Mich., - For the second consecutive match, Vlad Gurovski scored a goal to lead the Oakland women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Toledo in an exhibition match on Saturday at the OU Soccer Field. Alice Palmer, Joan Sieja and Julianne Boyle each scored helping the Golden Grizzles finish 2-0 in exhibition play.
"Toledo is a very athletic team so we had to work very hard to move the ball around in the second half," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "I thought our team did a nice job trying to find space that certainly created chances which led to some really nice goals. We can move some people around and make changes tactically but at the end of the day, the girls' passion and determination in the second half really made the difference."
Palmer put Oakland on the board first powering a shot past the Toledo keeper from six yards out in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead. The Rockets responded with the equalizer 15 minutes later as Megan Conner slid a shot past Stephanie Bukovec.
In the 63rd minute, Aly Rawson placed a long service from her defensive position to Palmer who took the ball up the left side and sent a cross into the box. Gurovski then out-muscled the netminder and slid the ball into the back of the net putting Oakland up for good, 2-1.
Sieja made an immediate impact after subbing in during the 68th minute as she took the ball, made two aggressive moves into the box and was tripped drawing a penalty. She capitalized on the penalty kick sending a shot to the right side giving the Golden Grizzles a 3-1 advantage. Boyle capped off the scoring late in the contest firing a laser into the net from 25 yards out off a feed from Kendra Prince.
Oakland will begin regular-season play on the road at Western Michigan on Friday, Aug. 22 at 4 p.m.
