MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Nola Anderson scored a career-high 21 points and Olivia Nash tallied a double-double as Oakland fell to Central Michigan, the 15th ranked mid-major team in the country, 74-69, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Arena. The Golden Grizzlies shot 41.2 percent from the field compared to just 33.8 percent by the Chippewas.
Anderson recorded her first-ever 20-point performance with a career-best nine field goals. Nash tallied 16 points and 13 boards for her fifth double-double of the season and 20th of her career. Elena Popkey ended the game with 12 points, while Leah Somerfield collected a career-high 14 rebounds, tied for the most by an Oakland player this season.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before going on a 16-4 run and eventually tying the game at 59-59 after a Zakiya Minifee layup. Oakland took its first lead since the opening half at the 1:34 mark as Popkey hit a 3-pointer to take a 67-66 advantage. CMU retook the lead after a Crystal Bradford layup with 47 seconds remaining and Kerby Tamm hit four free throws down the stretch to give the Chippewas the victory.
Oakland led for a majority of the first half, going up by as many as seven, before Central Michigan closed the half on a 12-2 run to lead 42-35 at halftime. Popkey recorded nine of her 12 points in the period as Oakland shot 42.4 percent with five 3-pointers.
Central Michigan was led by Bradford and Jessica Green who each tallied 20 points. The Chippewas finished the game 21-for-28 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Grizzlies will play its final non-conference game and first of the new year on Jan. 2 at Dartmouth beginning at 2 p.m.
