ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshman Holly Morren and senior Tricia Grant were two-time winners as the Oakland women's swimming and diving team defeated both Ohio and Youngstown State in a double dual meet Friday evening at the Oakland Aquatics Center. Oakland bested Ohio 157-131 and outscored Youngstown State 202-94.
Morren, who has turned in strong swims in the sprint freestyle races, went back-to-back with wins in the 50 free (24.27) and 100 free (52.15) for her first wins as a collegiate swimmer. Grant was solid on both the 1-meter (262.55) and 3-meter (271.40) boards, winning both events for the fourth time this year.
"We've had some tough road trips, so it was nice to be back home," Oakland head coach Pete Hovland said. "That level of comfort came at a good time."
Also earning individual wins were Takara Martin (200 breaststroke, 2:20.85) and Patricia Aschan (400 IM, 4:29.59). Oakland's 400 free relay team of Nikki Flynn, Emily Flowers, Arynn de Leeuw and Morren also captured a victory, touching first in 3:29.84.
Oakland's depth proved to be the key factor on the night. Martin's win in the 200 breast was part of a 1-2-3 finish for the Golden Grizzlies thanks to strong swims by Rachel Waite (2:22.99) and Melissa VanderMeulen (2:24.67). Allison Bellford added a second-place finish in the 50 free (24.82) to give Oakland a 1-2 in that event.
Overall, the Golden Grizzlies had three in the top six finishers in nine events, with four races featuring three Oakland swimmers in the top five places.
"We knew that the second half of the meet we would get stronger," Hovland said of Oakland's finish.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action Saturday, Nov. 1 when the women's team joins up with the Oakland men's squad to host Wayne State at 1 p.m. Prior to the meet, the team will have a ring presentation to commemorate the team's 2014 Horizon League team titles.
