ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Gerald Ben scored off a penalty kick in the second half to lead Oakland as they fell to Michigan, 3-1, Wednesday night in men's soccer action at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The loss snaps Oakland's seven-match unbeaten streak and ends its span of six consecutive shutouts.
"You can't dig yourself a hole like that and it put us behind the 8-ball," said head coach Eric Pogue. "We gave up a corner-kick goal which I think is the first set-piece goal we have given up all year. I thought we battled hard the rest of the first half and the second half we battled hard. But you can't give a good team enough space up top of the 18-yard box to get their shots off. They were two good finishes but we need to be tighter to prevent those shots. I was proud of the way the guys battled down two goals and they didn't mail it in and kept fighting. We will move on and get ready for Saturday."
Down 2-0, Matt Rickard was fouled in the box which set up Ben to convert his second penalty kick of the season in the 76th minute. The Wolverines got on the board first in the third minute as Colin McAtee headed in a corner kick to break Oakland's streak of over 490 minutes without allowing a goal.
UM pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute as Marcos Ugarte went left to right and took a shot from 17 yards out. Michigan took the 3-1 advantage as Ahinga Selemani hit a rocket with his left foot from 22 yards away to the upper-90.
Wes Mink falls to 7-4-1 on the season after making four saves and loses for the first time since Sept. 20, while allowing his first goal since Oct. 1.
The Golden Grizzlies will play their final home match of the season on Saturday as they look to stay unbeaten in Horizon League play against Wright State beginning at 7 p.m. at the Oakland Soccer Field. It is Senior Night as Oakland will celebrate Joey Tinnion, Gavin Hoy, John DeLeon, Cody Archibald and Dylan Schauder at halftime.
