ROCHESTER, Mich. - Matt Dudley scored a goal and recorded an assist, while the defense posted its fifth consecutive shutout as Oakland defeated Belmont, 2-0, in men's soccer action to stay in first place in the Horizon League standings Saturday night at the Oakland Soccer Field. The shutout streak matches the fourth-longest streak in program history.
"Credit to Belmont, they are a much better team than their record indicates," said head coach Eric Pogue. "I knew we were going to have a tough game on our hands. We were lucky enough to get an early goal from Dudley and I think we played a really good second half. We pressured them more and (Matt) Rickard came in and sealed the game which took some of the pressure off. I thought the second half we did a much better job. That shows a maturing team, early in the season I don't think we do that but the defensive mindset of the entire team is paying dividends."
Dudley scored the first goal in the 16th minutes as he one-timed a pass from Joey Tinnion into the back of the net for his third of the season. Matt Rickard put the game away for the Golden Grizzlies in the 85th minute as he received a long pass from Dudley for a breakaway and finished to the left post.
Wes Mink recorded five saves to keep a clean sheet for his sixth win of the season as the Oakland defense has not allowed a goal in over 489 minutes of action dating back to Oct. 1.
The Golden Grizzlies will be home on Wednesday for non-conference action and they face No. 16 Michigan State at the Oakland Soccer Field beginning at 7 p.m.
