OAKLAND AND MILWAUKEE PLAY TO SCORELESS DRAW

Oct. 18, 2014

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Behind a solid defensive effort from the back line, Alison Holland recorded her second consecutive shutout as Oakland (4-9-2, 2-2-1) played Milwaukee (5-9-2, 1-3-2) to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Field. Holland made two saves facing 11 shots to secure her third shutout of the season while Joan Sieja led the Golden Grizzles offensively with three shots. Aly Rawson scored a second half goal but it was disallowed due to a penalty inside the box.

"We earned a great point on the road today against a very strong Milwaukee team," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "They threw everything at us and we responded with a solid team defensive performance with Holland pulling off two top-class saves to help us earn the shutout. We created a couple of good chances and even had one goal disallowed in the game for an apparent foul. I am very proud of our performance this afternoon. We now focus our attention on preparing for our game against UDM on Wednesday."

In the 56th minute, Sieja sent a cross in off a corner kick which appeared to bounce off a couple of bodies before Rawson flicked the ball into the back of the net. However, Oakland was called for a foul inside the box and the goal was disallowed.

Later in the period, Oakland's defensive wall blocked two consecutive Milwaukee free kicks just outside the 18-yard box.

Oakland's best chance came in the 76th minute as Vlad Gurovski broke in all alone on a breakaway taking the ball deep into the box on the left side. UWM goalkeeper Paige Lincicum came out for a challenge to cut off the angle and made a sliding foot save off Gurovski's shot.

Holland made a great save in 80th minute tipping a high shot over the cross bar to keep the game scoreless.

The Golden Grizzlies had back-to-back corner kick opportunities to begin the second overtime but was unable to convert.

Oakland travels to the Motor City for a Horizon League and Metro Series match at rival University of Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
