DETROIT - Matt Dudley scored the game-winning goal off a free kick in double overtime to lead Oakland over the University of Detroit Mercy in men's soccer action, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Titan Field. With the victory the Golden Grizzlies claim the first two points of the inaugural Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation.

"This was a great effort by the boys tonight against a very good Detroit-Mercy team," said head coach Eric Pogue. "The guys just kept the belief and working hard. They got a goal but we knew we still had plenty of time for our chances to come. We just kept persevering and for that goal to come to get us in the game was big. I'm just really proud of the boys' effort."

In the 105th minute, Dudley took a free kick from 20 yards away and bent it in the upper right corner for the game winner. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Shawn Claud Lawson netted the equalizer after receiving a cross from John DeLeon from the right side. The shot was initially stopped but he recovered the rebound for his first goal of the season.

UDM scored first in the 66th minute as Matt Harkema beat Wes Mink to a free ball and slotted it into an open net.

The Golden Grizzlies will be home on Saturday when they host Green Bay for another Horizon League matchup beginning at 7 p.m. at the Oakland Soccer Field.
