Ypsilanti, Mich. - Cassie Pelloni led the offense for the Golden Grizzlies with 10 kills as Oakland (4-4) dropped a 3-0 decision to host, Eastern Michigan (4-4) on Tuesday night in the Convocation Center. OU lost the match with set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23.
"Today we did not play to our individual and collective capabilities," said coach, Rob Beam. "We learned some valuable things that will contribute to future success. The highlight for me was the performances we had in the third set by our substitutes. Their energy really provided an epic comeback."
Taylor Humm added 15 digs and eight kills in the loss, while Amanda Baker added six kills and Ciara Schultz recorded 10 digs.
The first set of the match was back-and-forth in nature but Eastern Michigan was able to pull ahead for the 25-22 win. The second set began in favor of the Eagles as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The home team proceeded to control the match leading by as many as seven at 17-10 and continued their energy for a 25-18 win.
The final set of the match was again a close one as Oakland found itself in a must-win situation. The set score showed 22-15 in favor of Eastern Michigan when Schultz served eight times in a row, including two service aces, and three attack errors by the Eagles. Though Oakland came close by tying the score up 22-22, the visitors could not come up with the set victory and ultimately dropped the set 25-23.
Oakland plays next this weekend in the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. OU will play Auburn on Sept. 13 and take on Notre Dame and Loyola on Sept. 14.
