OAKLAND FALLS 2-0 TO MILWAUKEE IN LEAGUE SEMIFINALS

Nov. 16, 2013

Box Score

CHICAGO - Shawn Claud Lawson had three shots, including one on goal, and Sean Lewis recorded five saves, but the Oakland men's soccer team (7-7-5) dropped a Horizon League Championship semifinal match to Milwaukee (14-2-2), 2-1, on Saturday at Flames Field. OU was outshot 12-10 in the match.

"No one likes to see your season end but we came across a very complete, balanced strong Milwaukee team," said coach Eric Pogue. "(Laurie) Bell scored an absolutely fantastic goal early and we were fighting from behind all game which is difficult. Credit to our men as we came out early in the second half with a ton of fight, energy and determination and created a number of scoring chances on their goal, just lacked the final quality to get that goal to make the game 2-1 and make a war of it."

Milwaukee scored first in the 13th minute as Horizon League Co-Player of the Year Laurie Bell took a long shot from the left side of the field that went over the outstretched hand of Sean Lewis and off the right post into the goal.

The Panthers would add to the lead in the 38th minute as Oakland could not clear a UWM shot and Andrew Stone took advantage sliding it low to the left side of the goal for the 2-0 advantage. Joey Tinnion, an All-Horizon League second team selection, left the game in the 28th minute after being taken out by the Milwaukee goalkeeper and was unable to return.

The weather got worse in the second half as the rain and wind picked up but Oakland created good chances to try and get back in the game. Chase Jabbori took a shot that went just wide in the 58th minute and 24 seconds later Jacob VanberLaan took a header that went high of the net. Later, Miche'le Lipari appeared to hit the post in the 68th minute after a good pass from Jabbori.

Milwaukee's Liam Anderson records his ninth shutout of the season on with 2 saves.

"Very proud of our men overall especially our seven seniors that gave so much to our team," added Pogue. "Wish we could have lived to fight another day for them, but it was not to be tonight, but we can hold our heads high with the effort and fight we showed to try to get back tonight and really all year as our men have been warriors."
