ROCHESTER, Mich. - Dylan Schauder had two shots on goal and Sean Lewis made two saves but the Oakland men's soccer team (5-6-5, 3-2-1 HL) fell to UIC (13-3, 6-0 HL), 1-0, on Wednesday night at the OU Soccer Field. It was Senior Night as Lewis, Morgan Spann, Sean Magee, Miche'le Lipari, Scott Messer, Nick Kristock and Lucas Diener were honored at halftime.
"UIC is an excellent team, very well coached, very talented players as they are not undefeated in the league with a quality record for no reason," said coach Eric Pogue. "But I thought we competed with them as it was a 50-50 game back and forth and to know that this is the top of the Horizon League, we are excited to get back out there and compete with them in the tournament."
UIC clinched the Horizon League regular season title with the win. The Flames scored the lone goal of the match as Jacob VanderLaan was called for a yellow card in the box and awarded Josh Beard a penalty shot that he was able convert in the 37th minute.
Just before the penalty kick, the Golden Grizzlies had an opportunity to take the lead as Chase Jabbori would take a header but was saved by UIC's Andrew Putna. In the second half, Shawn Claud Lawson would look to score the equalizer but sent it just wide of the net in the 53rd minute.
OU outshot the Flames 10-6 in the match but Putna recorded his ninth shutout of the year with five saves.
Oakland will look to end the regular season with a win as they travel to Green Bay for the final Horizon League match of the season on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
