COLUMBUS, Ohio - Gavin Hoy led with five shots, including three on goal, as the Oakland men's soccer team (5-4-5) hit three posts but were unable to score and fell to Ohio State (3-6-5), 4-0, Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies led the Buckeyes in shots by a 18-10 margin in the match.
"We are disappointed with the loss, but I don't think it was a 4-0 loss," said head coach Eric Pogue. "I thought we had a lot of nice opportunities, their goalie made some nice saves and we hit some posts. We didn't finish our opportunities and they really punished us on the opportunities they did have but I thought we controlled some stretches in the game."
Ohio State would get on the board first in the seventh minute as Ryan Ivancic received a pass from six yards out and placed it in the back left of the net. OSU pushed the score to 2-0 as Danny Jensen would hit in a header off a corner kick from Zach Mason in the 27th minute. Oakland would look to get on the board before the end of the half as Matt Dudley would hit the post in the 37th minute and Matt Rickard would connect with a header off the frame in the 41st minute.
The Golden Grizzlies would come out strong in the second half as Hoy had a shot hit the post and Rickard would have another header saved. OSU score shortly after as Kenny Cunningham would head in a low cross in front of the net in the 54th minute. After an OU corner kick, the Buckeyes would attack on the other end as Yianni Sarris would score on a cross from the far side into the near post.
OSU's Alex Ivanov finished the match with seven saves to record the shut out, while Scott Messer recorded three saves and suffered his second loss of the season.
The Golden Grizzlies will return to conference play this weekend when they face Milwaukee on Saturday at Engelmann Field starting at 8 p.m. ET. Oakland is currently second in the Horizon League, while the Panthers are third in the standings.
