CLEVELAND - Taylor Humm finished with 10 kills and 15 digs and Alli Kirk added 15 digs as the Oakland volleyball team (5-4) swept Buffalo (3-5) in the second match of the CSU Tournament Saturday morning in Woodling Gymnasium. The Golden Grizzlies won with set scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-21.
"We played well this morning as I thought our defense did a good job of limiting their best scorers," said head coach Rob Beam. "When we were behind early in sets, our team responded very well with consistent, high level play."
Meghan Bray added 10 kills while Brittany Holbrook and Ciara Schultz had eight kills each. Alissa Valentine led OU with 15 assists and Schultz added 14 assists.
Oakland came out strong in the opening set as the Golden Grizzlies took an early 8-4 but UB fought back to tie the set at 10-10 behind three straight kills. OU dominated the rest of the set winning 15 of the next 20 points as they held the Bulls to a .075 hitting percentage by forcing eight hitting errors as Bray and Humm earned four kills each to win 25-15.
Buffalo dominated the early part of the second set, leading by as many as four points twice in the set. Oakland battled back to tie the match on seven different occasions as the teams were locked at 21-21. OU would win four out of the next six points as Holbrook had two out of her four kills in the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Bulls would once again take control of the third set jumping out to a 15-9 lead by forcing five Oakland attack errors. The Golden Grizzlies were not to be denied as they pushed the match to a 20-20 tie as Humm and Bray would get back-to-back kills to seal a 25-21 set victory to take the match.
The Golden Grizzlies will play the final match of the Cleveland State Tournament tonight against the host Vikings at 7 p.m. inside Woodling Gymnasium.
