ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Kyla Kellermann scored the goal for Oakland (3-2-3) in a 1-1 draw with Northwestern (4-3-2) on Sunday at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Wildcats 14-13.
"We're disappointed at this point, because we felt that was a game we could've and should've won," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "It's better than losing, but we just didn't have as much energy as we should've and were missing some quality plays."
Oakland took the lead in the 46th minute, when Abigail Haelewyn played the ball to Kellermann in behind the Northwestern defense. After two touches towards goal, Kellermann buried her shot inside the edge of the far post for her team-leading sixth goal. Haelewyn picked up her eighth assist of the season on the play.
The Golden Grizzlies nearly took a two-goal lead in the 51st minute when Haelewyn got open inside the penalty area and blasted a shot off the underside of the crossbar. The rebound fell to Meghan Reynolds, but her attempted volley was blocked.
Shortly after the missed chance, Northwestern scored to tie the game. Kate Allen dispossessed an OU defender and then fired a shot off the inside edge of the far post that rolled into the net. It was the fifth goal of the season for Allen, the leading scorer for the Wildcats.
Goalkeeper Shannon Coley started the match strong with a big save on a header attempt in the first half and continued to play well, finishing with five saves. While OU had the edge in total shots, Northwestern had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Golden Grizzlies hit the road for their next match, playing at Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m.
