HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Meghan Reynolds and Kyla Kellermann scored a pair of first-half goals as Oakland (3-2-2) won, 2-0, over Northern Kentucky (2-5-0) on Friday at the NKU Soccer Stadium. Abigail Haelewyn assisted on both goals for the Golden Grizzlies.
"We had a very good first half," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "Especially in the first 20-25 minutes, when we worked very hard and moved the ball extremely well. Overall it was a goof performance and we limited Northern Kentucky to counter-attack opportunities."
Defensive pressure paid off for the Golden Grizzlies in the 20th minute when Haelewyn stole the ball from an Northern Kentucky player and slotted a pass to Reynolds who used one touch to beat a defender and scored from beyond the penalty spot.
Oakland added a second goal less than three minutes later when Haelewyn slipped a pass to Kellermann, who turned and finished the ball from just inside the 18-yard area. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for the OU striker.
Haelewyn began the week ranked No. 8 in assists in the NCAA and now has seven assists through the first seven matches of the season.
In goal, Shannon Coley registered three saves to earn the shutout. The ninth shutout of her career, Coley is now tied for fourth all-time in career shutouts at OU. Both teams finished with 13 shots, but OU earned a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Oakland returns to the OU Soccer Field on Sunday to host Northwestern at 1 p.m. The Wildcats are the third Big Ten opponent for Oakland in the last four matches.
