ROCHESTER, Mich. - Kyla Kellermann's hat trick led the way as Oakland posted a 9-0 win over Rochester College Friday in the season opener at the OU Soccer Field. Seven different players scored for the Golden Grizzlies, as OU outshot the Warriors 47-0.
"The girls did great today," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "Rochester College did their best despite not having a full roster. It was a good day, a fun day and a great start to the year."
Kellermann scored twice in the first half, including the first goal of the year on a header from a cross. She then doubled the OU lead by putting in a rebound from a shot by Serena San Cartier. The Golden Grizzlies made it 3-0 in the 19th minute on a goal from Joan Sieja, but then failed to score for the remainder of the first half as Rochester College maintained a compact backline.
Oakland turned up the pressure in the second half and Kellermann completed the hat trick with a goal in the 60th minute. That opened the door for OU to score a total of six goals in the second half. Jamie Horne, Brianna Bowery, San Cartier, Kourtney Grant and Jenna Taylor each found the back of the net for the Golden Grizzlies, who launched 30 shots in the second half alone.
Abigail Haelewyn did not score, but was a key facilitator for the Golden Grizzlies offense, collecting a game-high three assists.
Payj O'Shea got the shutout in goal for Oakland. Miranda Viaene put forth a valiant effort in goal for the Warriors, making 13 saves.
The Golden Grizzlies are back in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Eastern Michigan. Fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs to the match as the EMU field is currently undergoing renovations.
