Oakland Wins Series Finale against SDSU 5-3

ROCHESTER, Mich.- Morgan Muron had two hits and two RBIs, while Erin Galloway and Colleen Zimmerman added two hits as the Oakland softball team (5-31, 3-15) beat South Dakota State (10-22-1, 4-11), 5-3, to win its first Summit League series of the season, Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.

"I'm glad to finally see some fight in our team and the excitement by the girls to win our first series," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "I still see a lot of good things and some things we still need to work on. All in all I'm happy with the win as we look forward to Toledo next week."

Brittany Doyle (2-14) earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs, surrendering only one hit and striking out four batters. SDSU's Kori Seidlitz (4-9) suffered the loss, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, surrendering seven hits and striking out five batters.

SDSU jumped out to an early lead as Morgan McCabe hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Oakland would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alyssa Shriver hit a sacrifice fly to score Chelsea Carena. The Jackrabbits would hit their second home run of the game in the top of the fifth inning as Alex Landon hit a solo home run to push the score to 3-1.

The Golden Grizzlies loaded the bases in the fifth inning, as Muron drew a walk followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Abbie Richardson and Brittany Prior to take a 4-3 lead. OU added one more run in the sixth inning as Muron drove in her second RBI of the game with a single up the middle to score Galloway.

The Golden Grizzlies will be on the road on Wednesday as they travel to Toledo for a midweek doubleheader and will host IUPUI at the OU Softball Field for the final home Summit League series of the season next weekend.
