SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 6 seed Southern Utah (14-16) came from 11 down in the final 3 minutes to upend No. 3 seed Oakland (17-15), 84-82, in the quarterfinals of The Summit League tournament on Sunday night inside Sioux Falls Arena. Reggie Hamilton led all scorers with 31 points.
It looked like the Golden Grizzlies were going to advance to their sixth straight semifinal round up 11 points with 3:13 remaining in the game. Been then the improbable happened. Hamilton, a 90 percent free-throw shooter on the season, missed three consecutive free throws and SUU's Damon Heuir knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game at 82.
The T-Birds would pick up another stop and then Jackson Stevenett scored his 26th point to put SUU ahead 84-82.
Hamilton then had a chance to tie with a floater in the lane, but it rattled out and the Grizzlies fouled. Stevenett missed a pair of free throws with just under 3 seconds left and OU called timeout. Hamilton dribbled to half court and the Golden Grizzlies again called timeout with 0.6 seconds on the clock. That proved to not be enough time to get a shot off as SUU completed a double-digit comeback.
Travis Bader went 6-for-10 from three and finished with 24 points for Oakland. Heuir tallied 23 points and Wade Collie had 14 off the bench for the T-Birds.
Drew Valentine led OU on the glass with 11 boards and finished with eight points. The Grizzlies went 15-for-27 from behind the arc (55.6%).
