ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Victoria Lipscomb scored 11 points to lead Oakland (5-3) in a 75-43 loss to Michigan State (8-0) on Wednesday at the Athletics Center O'rena. The crowd of 2,635 was a record for attendance at a Golden Grizzlies women's game.
"I think Michigan State had a really nice inside-out-game, the best we've seen so far this year," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "Becca Mills and Jasmine Hines had unbelievable shooting percentages on the block and we didn't have any answer for it. We shut them down for a spell and then [MSU] hit 3s. They shot 40 percent from the three, which just highlights the good inside outplay by State."
Oakland never led, but an early basket by Elena Popkey tied the game at 2-2 before an early spurt put Michigan State ahead for good. The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as 16 in the first half before cutting the lead to 10 points with under a minute to go in the first half. A last-second jumper put the Spartans in front 32-20 at the half.
Lipscomb scored to open the second half, but Oakland could not get any closer than the 32-22 margin. Lipscomb scored seven of her 11 points in the second half. Popkey finished with nine points and Elizabeth Hamlet tallied seven. Shelby Herrington was 2-for-2 from the field for five points and extended a streak of nine consecutive field goals over the last three games.
Karissa Bell led MSU, which is receiving votes in the latest AP Poll, with 16 points and nine rebounds. Annalise Pickrel scored 14 points, while Becca Mills and Jasmine Thomas scored 10 each. The Spartans shot 56.9 percent from the field and outrebounded Oakland 43-20.
The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Saturday with a game at Manhattan at 2 p.m.
