ROCHESTER, Mich.-- Elena Popkey had 20 points and Elizabeth Hamlet added 13 as Oakland (7-7, 1-1) rallied for a 68-59 win over IUPUI (7-6, 1-1) in Summit League play at the Athletics Center O'rena on Sunday. The Golden Grizzlies shot a season-high 60.5 percent from the field.
"I was really happy with how we handled their press," said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. "It really helped playing Michigan State, Purdue and UConn earlier in the year because those teams pressed us really hard and our team learned a lot from that. So we came in and felt prepared for the press and I thought our players were very smart with how they beat it."
The Golden Grizzlies were 15-for-20 (75.0 percent) from the field in the second half to rally from a 33-31 halftime deficit. Popkey was 4-for-4 in the second half, scoring 11 of her 20 points. She has led Oakland in scoring each of the last three games.
The two teams went back-and-forth until Victoria Lipscomb knocked down a 3-pointer with less than 10 minutes to play that sparked a 20-8 run that put OU in front for good. The Golden Grizzlies were 3-for-4 beyond the arc in the second half and finished the game shooting 44.4 percent from three-point range.
Hamlet was a perfect from the floor and went 5-of-5 at the free-throw line for the second consecutive game. She also tied for the team lead in rebounds and assists. Annemarie Hamlet had eight points and four assists.
Akilah Sims and Kerah Nelson had 10 points each to lead IUPUI, which shot 41.7 percent from the field. The Jaguaras were just 4-for-17 beyond the arc. Sims and Clara Mitchell had six rebounds each as IUPUI was able to grab 16 offensive rebounds and won the battle of the boards 30-25.
After being outrebounded 24-13 in the first half, the Golden Grizzlies had a 12-6 rebounding edge in the second half.
Shelby Herrington got Oakland going in the second half hitting back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 35-35, before Popkey knocked down a 3 to give OU its first second-half lead.
Oakland resumes Summit League action in the new year, playing at league newcomer Omaha (9-3, 1-1 Summit) on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
