ROCHESTER, Mich.-- Elena Popkey scored 14 points and Victoria Lipscomb added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists for Oakland (6-6) in a 65-31 win over Rochester College (6-8) on Friday night at the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies shot 45 percent from the field, had three players in double-digits and never trailed.
"I was pleased with how hard we played for the whole 40 minutes," said head coach Beckie Francis. "We had little goals for every four minutes and I felt like we achieved them most of the time. I was really pleased, especially with these two; Victoria[Lipscomb] and Elena [Popkey] had a really clean, sharp stat lines and I was really impressed."
Oakland jumped out to a 6-0 lead and went ahead 16-6 on a jumper by Popkey at the 14:08 mark of the first half. OU managed to maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. The Golden Grizzlies shot 62.1 percent from the field and held the Warriors scoreless for the final 5:31 to take a 41-17 lead into the half.
Popkey was 6-for-8 from the field, with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Elizabeth Hamlet was 3-for-3 from the field and scored eight points, as the OU starters shot 59.5 percent. Lipscomb equaled her career-high in assists and did not have a turnover, while Annemarie Hamlet also reached double-digits with 12 points.
Sinclair Russell posted four blocks and scored six points, both career-highs, and also grabbed five rebounds. Oakland earned a 45-33 rebounding edge, as Zakiya Minifee, Lipscomb and Annemarie Hamlet grabbed six rebounds each.
Sam Tomaschko led the Warriors with a double-double effort of 12 points and 11 rebounds, but was the only RC player in double-figures. Rochester College shot 25.0 percent from the field and 14.8 percent beyond the arc.
Friday was the final non-league game of the season for Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies open up Summit League play on December 28 against Western Illinois at the 6:30 p.m. in the O'rena.
