MACOMB, Ill.-- Joey Tinnion scored the lone goal for top-seeded Oakland (11-7-1) in a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Western Illinois (7-8-5) in The Summit League Championship final on Sunday at Jack MacKenzie Alumni Field. Seniors Kyle Bethel, Jeff Cheslik and John Timm were named to The Summit League All-Tournament Team.

"Congrats to WIU on winning today," said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. "They were the better team on the day and deserved the win. We did not play our best soccer and you cannot expect to win a championship away from home without playing at the top of your game."

After Nathan Bruinsma gave Western Illinois the lead in the 40th minute, Oakland needed just 21 seconds to level the score through Tinnion's strike. John DeLeon whipped in a cross to Tinnion who finished for his sixth goal of the season. The two teams finished the half even at 1-1.

Oakland picked up the pressure in the second half and was the more aggressive team, before Tyler Chavez scored a goal against the run of play in the 68th minute. A little over a minute later, Brunsma The Summit League Tournament MVP, scored his second to make it 3-1.

Trailing by two goals the Golden Grizzlies poured on the pressure and finished the match with a 28-16 edge in shots. The best chance for OU to cut into the deficit came in the 81st minute from the penalty spot. Lucas Diener's spot kick was saved by WIU goalkeeper Yves Dietrich and the follow up on the rebound missed high.

Dietrich recorded six saves for the Fighting Leathernecks, while Scott Messer recorded five saves for the Golden Grizzlies. With the win WIU earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

"Best of luck to Western Illinois, Coach Johnson and his staff, as they represent The Summit League in the NCAA Tournament," concluded Pogue.

The Golden Grizzlies won The Summit League regular season title outright with a 5-1-1 record in league play. Oakland will host the 2013 Summit League Men's Soccer Championship. The Black and Gold were led by four seniors this season: Bethel, Timm, Cheslik and Johnny Dreshaj.
