ROCHESTER, Mich. --
Marlen Knoph had a goal and an assist as Oakland (5-3-3, 2-0) held on for a 2-1 Summit League win over North Dakota State (4-7-0, 1-1) on Friday at the OU Soccer Field. Both goals for the Golden Grizzlies came in the first half.
"We played very well in the beginning," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We had chances to make it 3-0, which would've made it easier down the stretch, but instead they got the goal. We still got the victory so it was a good day on a wet day."
Abigail Haelewyn opened the scoring for Oakland just 7:21 into the match. Good combination play between Julianne Boyle and Knoph created space to play a bouncing ball in to Haelewyn, who volleyed the ball inside the left post. It was the second goal in as many games for the midfielder who also leads The Summit League in assists.
In the 19th minute, Knoph doubled the lead when she slotted home a rebound from a shot. Meghan Reynolds did well to beat a defender and played a ball to Kyla Kellermann whose shot was saved, but the rebound fell to Knoph who scored her third goal of the season.
The Golden Grizzlies outshot NDSU 12-1 in the first half, putting eight shots on goal. Defensively, Oakland did not allow an attempt on goal in the first half and finished the match with an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.
In the second half, NDSU took 11 shots and scored in the78th minute. The Golden Grizzlies failed to clear a corner kick by Anisha Kinnarath and Lizzie Lukas was there to hit a volley from the edge of the penalty area to make it 2-1.
With OU maintaining the one-goal lead, the final 12 minutes of the match were exciting as the Bison pressed forward in search of an equalizer, but the defense held firm for the Black and Gold blocking three of the final four shots.
The leaves Oakland as one of two teams with an unbeaten record in Summit League play. The Golden Grizzlies are currently tied with Western Illinois for first place in the league standings.
Oakland will wrap up a weekend league series on Sunday, by hosting South Dakota State at the OU Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
