FORT WAYNE, Ind.- Miche'le Lipari scored for Oakland (9-6, 4-1) in a 2-1 loss to Fort Wayne (3-12-1, 2-2-1) on Saturday at Heffner Soccer Complex. The Golden Grizzlies remain in first place in The Summit League standings with two matches left in the regular season.

"We didn't deserve to win today," said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. "Fort Wayne worked harder, were more committed and played with heart and passion. That is something we didn't do from top to bottom and the top starts with me."

After falling behind early, Oakland leveled the score in the 32nd minute on Lipari's sixth goal of the season. Kyle Bethel combined with Joey Tinnion, who played the ball to Lipari for the finish. It was the 11th helper of the season for Bethel who leads the NCAA in assists.

After outshooting IPFW 10-7 in the first half Oakland looked to gain a greater advantage when IPFW was reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute when Mitch Falkenstern was shown a red card.

However, the Mastodons were buoyed by the loss and in the 69th minute of play scored the match-winning goal from an Austin West free kick that sailed into the upper corner of the goal.

Bethel nearly scored from a corner kick in the 82nd minute, but his header rattled off the crossbar. Sean Claud Lawson also had a late shot that was saved.

OU outshot IPFW 17-15 for the match, but both teams finished with six shots on goal. Scott Messer made four saves for the Golden Grizzlies, while Brandon Cloutier had five stops for the Mastodons.

"This is as poorly as I've seen our team play all year... maybe two years," surmised Pogue. "That's disappointing, as we need to be playing our best soccer right now."

Oakland will have a week off before returning to league play on Sunday, Oct. 28 against Omaha at the UNO Soccer Field at 1 p.m. ET.
