ROCHESTER, Mich. - Kyla Kellermann scored two goals to lead the Oakland University women's soccer team (2-5-0) to a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh (1-5-2) on Sunday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field. Kellermann netted back-to-back goals in the second half.
"It was a great performance by a few players," said OU head coach Nick O'Shea. "The team played much better, we got behind the defense early and the forwards were running hard, our effort made a big difference."
Meghan Reynolds opened the scoring for Oakland in the 20th minute as she finished a pass from Amy Trandell just beyond the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Kristina Rioux. Serena San Cartier created the scoring opportunity with a cross that was deflected towards Trandell who then forwarded the ball to Reynolds who was open at the back post.
Anne Berschbach made her first start of the year for OU and made five saves to earn the shutout victory. Rioux collected three saves for Pittsburgh who outshot Oakland 15-13, but the Golden Grizzlies earned a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Kellermann doubled the Oakland lead in the 54th minute. The freshman was on the receiving end of a pass from Marlen Knoph and she slid the ball into the side netting from 15 yards out. Just two minutes later the Elmvale, Ontario native found the net again after Pittsburgh failed to deal with a cross from Julianne Boyle. Kellermann struck a first-time volley inside the near post for her second of the game.
Oakland was aggressive early, and nearly took the lead when Kellermann hit a shot that forced a save from Rioux in the third minute. The Golden Grizzlies continued pressure when Kara Weber headed the ball off the crossbar in the 10th minute.
OU gets back to action Sept. 16 when the Golden Grizzlies host Butler at 7 p.m. at the OU Soccer Field.
