ROCHESTER, Mich. - Brittany Holbrook had 16 kills and Alissa Valentine had 28 assists as the Gold team defeated the Black team 2-1 (25-15, 25-17, 22-25) in the annual Oakland University volleyball Black and Gold scrimmage Saturday night in the Athletics Center O'rena. In total 14 players saw action for the Golden Grizzlies.
"I think we played really well tonight and the event was great," said head coach Rob Beam. "We played a high level of volleyball tonight and showed one of our strengths tonight, which is our depth."
In the first set, the Gold team went on an eight-point run highlighted by a strong kill by Holbrook to go up 20-10. She finished the match with a match-high 16 kills and hit .406 on the night. The Black team was led by Ashleigh Slemmer and Taylor Humm who both had four kills in the set.
The second set was back-and-forth until Meghan Bray took over the set helping the Gold team win 11 of the final 17 points. She started the rally with an ace to put the Gold team up by 14-11 and then recorded three straight kills to close it out the set. Alli Kirk kept the Black team close with 11 assists in the set.
The final set was dominated by the Black team as Humm led the way with five kills in the set and finished with a team-high 12 kills for the night. Slemmer added another four kills in the set for a total of 10 in the match. Kirk finished with 24 assists and sophomore Audrey Wilson added 10 kills for the Gold team.
The Golden Grizzlies officially start their season on Aug. 26 against Niagara at 5 p.m. in the Blue-Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo.
