Oakland Falls Twice To UMKC

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshman Erika Polidori, junior Kylie Schalz and freshman Alyssa Shriver had three hits each as the Oakland University softball team (11-24, 5-12 Summit) fell twice to UMKC (29-14, 12-5 Summit) 4-2 (8 innings) and 11-4, Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore Abbie Richardson singled and was replaced by a pinch runner, sophomore Ali Nikolaus. Shriver singled to move Nikolaus to second followed by a walk to freshman Megan McQueen.

Following a strikeout, UMKC made a throwing error that scored Nikolaus. Polidori dropped down a single to score Shriver.

In the fifth, UMKC got singles from Katie Hennings and Danielle Bennefeld. With two outs, Kaelene Curry singled to drive in both runners and tie the game at 2-2.

In the seventh with one out for UMKC, Bennefeld doubled to left center field. The Golden Grizzlies then got two ground outs to get out of the inning.

In the eighth, Curry doubled to right center field to lead things off. Oakland got a fly out and a strike out. Megan Ussary tripled down the right field line to score Curry. Emily Ott beat out a single to the left side to score Ussary.

For Oakland, Polidori was 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Senior Marisa Everitt (5-6) gave up seven hits, four runs, walked one and struck out six in eight innings.

For UMKC, Kaelene Curry was 2-for-3, had a double, scored a run and drove in two runs. Deanna Friese (20-7) gave up six hits, two runs, one earned, walked two and struck out eight in eight innings.

In the nightcap, the Kangaroos jumped to an early 10-1 lead after two innings.

In the fifth, Polidori laced a double to left field to lead off the inning. Junior Kelsey Krych reached on an error and sophomore Erin Galloway singled to load the bases. Schalz singled to left field to score Polidori and Krych. The leftfielder misplayed the ball which allowed Galloway to score, making it 10-4.

UMKC would score in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Schalz reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball. Shriver belted a double to centerfield to score Schalz.

For Oakland, Schalz was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, Galloway was 2-for-4 and scored twice while freshman Shelby Gott and Shriver had two hits each.

enior Alison Tansel (3-8) gave up seven hits, 10 runs, all unearned and struck out one in 1.2 innings. Junior Brittany Doyle threw solid in relief giving up six hits, one run and struck out four in 5.1 innings.

For UMKC, Ott was 3-for-4 and scored three runs while Bennefeld was 2-for-4, had a home run, scored two runs and drove in four runs. Anna Sokolik (5-0) gave up 10 hits, five runs, two earned, walked one and struck out seven in seven innings.

Oakland closes out the series with a single game on Sunday, April 24. The game is scheduled to start at noon. Live stats will be available at www.ougrizzlies.com.
