PRIMM, Nev. - Sophomore Jakob Ziegler recorded a 2-under-par 70 in his final round, while senior Michael Marks shot an even-par 72 to lead the Oakland University men's golf team at The Summit League Championship on Tuesday at Primm Valley Golf Club (Desert Course). The Golden Grizzlies finished in eighth place (309-296-291=896/+32), while UMKC won the title with an overall score of 860 (-4).
"I am really disappointed on how this weekend ended up," said OU coach Brian Costello. "We had a tremendous season leading up to this and it's too bad this is how it had to end. We've lacked depth all season and hopefully we will work hard this summer and come back next season ready to make a run at a championship. Give UMKC credit for shooting 8-under-par in the second round with the wind blowing up to 30 miles-an-hour, and they certainly earned the championship this weekend."
Junior Michael Coriasso shot a final round 74 to finish in a tie for 10th place for the second consecutive season with an overall score of 219 (+3). Ziegler tallied a tie for 12th-place finish with a total score of 220 (+4), while sophomore Phil Gieseker shot a final round 75 to post a total of 227 (+11) and finish in a tie for 31st place.
Ziegler finishes the season with a school record 14 rounds under par and his 70 is the second lowest score in a single round at the league championship. He finished the season with The Summit League's top scoring average of 72.37. That mark ranks as the fourth-lowest in single-season school history, behind No. 1 Brian Stuard (72.25 / 2004-05), No. 2 Jon Pauli (72.35 / 2005-06) and No. 3 Brian Stuard (72.36 / 2003-04).
