MACOMB, Ill. - Sophomore Jakob Ziegler broke the single-season school record with his 11th round under par this season, shooting 71 (-1), while sophomore transfer Phil Gieseker finished in a tie for fourth place with an overall score of 146 (+2) to lead the Oakland University men's golf team to a seventh-place finish (306-303/609) at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational on Tuesday at Harry Mussatto Golf Course (Par 72, 6,862 yards).3
"The weather conditions only allowed the guys to complete the final 2 or 3 holes left in their second round, and the third round was cancelled," said OU coach Brian Costello. "With these tough conditions, it was very difficult."
Ziegler's 11 rounds of under par broke the old single-season school record of 10 held by PGA Tour player Brian Stuard and Jon Pauli set in 2004-05 and 2005-06, respectively.
"Not real surprised that Jakob has broken the record, even this early in the season," said Costello. "He had a great fall and is beginning to find his game in the spring. I have no doubt that he will set the bar very high when his career is finished at Oakland."
Senior Michael Marks shot a 77 in the second round to finish in a tie for 28th place (153/+9). Redshirt freshman Matt Domagalski was the only other OU player to break 80, tallying a score of 79 to finish in a tie for 41st place (157/+13).
Tournament host Western Illinois fired a round of 299 (+11) in Round 2 to win its own tournament with an overall score of 593 (+17). Summit League foe South Dakota State finished second with a score of 596 (+20) and Green Bay rounded out the top three with a score of 601 (+25).
WIU's Andrew Godfrey rallied to capture medalist honors by shooting a 74 today and finished the tournament with a 1-under-par score of 143. SDSU's Hudson Carpenter shot the second-lowest round of the day, along with Ziegler, with a 71 to finish one shot off the pace at 144 (E).
The Golden Grizzlies will compete in the adidas Hoosier Invitational on April 9-10 at the IU Golf Course.
