MACOMB, Ill. - Senior Keith Benson posted his 14th double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, junior Reggie Hamilton added 20 points and senior Larry Wright finished with 17, to lead Oakland University (17-8, 12-0) past Western Illinois University (7-15, 2-9), 88-65, in Summit League men's basketball action on Thursday inside Western Hall on Waste Management Court.
"When you win 20 in a row you have to have lots of players and we do," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "Ryan (Bass) stepped in and played well, Ilija (Milutinovic) had 7 points and 3 rebounds, the guys step in and do what they have to do."
Wright surpassed 1,000 points for his career tonight, while Benson became just the second player in league history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (1,715 points, 1,000 rebounds). Oral Roberts' Caleb Green (2003-07) leads the league in both categories with 2,504 points and 1,189 rebounds.
Freshman Travis Bader reached double figures with 13 points on 2 of 4 3-pointers, while 9 of 10 Oakland players scored on the night.
WIU's Matt Lander led all scorers with 24, while Kaimarr Price added 18 points and Emeka Okafor, Jr. finished with 11 points.
The Golden Grizzlies have now won 20 consecutive league games and tied the league's second-best start at 12-0, matching Oral Roberts' 12-0 start in 2007-08. The Grizzlies are now chasing Cleveland State's 14-0 start to the 1992-93 season. OU is also riding a season-best 10-game winning streak.
Oakland led wire-to-wire but held a slim seven-point lead at halftime, 42-35. The Leathernecks got within five early in the second half, but the Golden Grizzlies would extend the lead all the way to 25 points with just over 1 minute left in the game to cruise to their 10th straight win at WIU.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for a game against IUPUI on Saturday night inside Conseco Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on OU's flagship station WDFN-AM (1130) with Mario Impemba (play-by-play) and Neal Ruhl (color).
