MACON, Ga. - Sophomore Erin Galloway went four-for-six as the Oakland University softball team (0-2) fell twice to Mercer (6-4), 6-1 and 8-0, Monday afternoon at Sikes Field.
"We got the jitters out of the way now," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "We are still a work in progress. We're just taking it one game at a time. Tomorrow starts a new season. We are 0-0."
In game one, Mercer took advantage of three errors to stake out a 3-0 lead after three innings. In the fifth, Oakland threatened with runners at second and third. The Bears got a ground out to end the innings.
Mercer got a three-run home run from Kristin Marko in the bottom of the fifth. In the seventh inning, sophomore Abbie Richardson singled and moved to third on a double from Galloway. After two outs, junior Kelsey Krych singled to the left side to score Richardson.
For Oakland, Galloway went 3-for-3 with a double. Junior Brittany Doyle (0-1) gave up eight hits, six runs, four earned, walked one and struck out two in 4.2 innings of work.
In the night cap, the Bears used four hits and two errors to score twice in the third inning. Mercer scored six runs in the fourth to seal the game.
Senior Alyssa Deacon and Galloway had one hit each for Oakland. Senior Alison Tansel (0-1) gave up eight hits, eight runs, three earned in 3.1 innings.
Oakland travels to Orangesburg, S.C., Feb. 22 to take on South Carolina State. The double header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Live Stats for all spring break games can be found at www.ougrizzlies.com
