ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Reggie Hamilton scored a game-high 30 points and senior Keith Benson posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Oakland University (18-9, 13-1) past IPFW (16-9, 9-5), 86-78, on Saturday inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
"When you play over the course of a whole season, you are not going to play your best every night," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "When that happens, you have to find a way to win and we did that tonight."
Benson blocked six shots and now has 44 double-doubles in his career. Freshman Travis Bader finished with 15 points and made all four free throws at the end of regulation to ice the game. Sophomore Drew Valentine tallied 14 points for the Golden Grizzlies.
IPFW was led by Frank Gaines with 27 points, while Ben Botts finished with 19 and Antwaun Boyd scored 10 for the Mastodons.
Oakland led for the entire first half and took a 40-33 lead in to intermission. The Mastodons took their first lead on a jumper by Zach Plackemeier, 43-42, with 15:58 remaining in the game. There would be five lead changes over the next few minutes, but OU used a 12-2 run to take a seven-point lead, 67-60, with just over 5 minutes left.
The lead grew to 12 points with 1:27 left in the game, but the Mastodons rallied with a 7-0 run and trailed by just three points, 78-75, after Botts made a 3-pointer with 25 seconds on the game clock. OU's lead shrunk to just two points, 80-78, with 14 seconds remaining and Hamilton was fouled.
Hamilton then missed both free throws, finishing 13-for-17 in the game, but as Botts went to take a 3-pointer that would have given IPFW the lead, Hamilton blocked his shot from behind and was intentionally fouled at the other end. Bader made all four free throws after IPFW was whistled for two technical fouls and OU held on for the win.
The Golden Grizzlies will host North Dakota State University next Thursday inside the O'rena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
