ROCHESTER, Mich. - A first-half goal by Kyla Kellermann proved to be the difference, as the Oakland women's soccer team (3-8-0, 1-0) beat IPFW (3-6-0, 0-1), 1-0, in both teams' Summit League opener on Saturday at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Mastodons 16-7.

"It's great to get a win in your first league game," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "IPFW put up a great fight. We had some chances to go up 2-0, but just couldn't put them away. We are very excited to be 1-0 in Summit League play after this weekend."

Kellermann put Oakland ahead in the 30th minute with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The play came as the result of a give-and-go worked between Kellermann and Nicole DeLuca, which left Kellermann open eight yards from goal, where she slotted the ball inside the far post for the lead.

Oakland outshot IPFW 9-4 in the first half with four shots on goal. However, the Mastodons nearly scored in the 37th minute when Lisa Underwood hit a long-distance shot that struck the right post and bounced out. On the rebound Danielle Bishop had her shot saved by OU goalkeeper Anne Berschbach.

In the second half, Oakland continued to push forward and a break out by Serena San Cartier looked like it would double the lead, but an IPFW defender tackled the ball away just before the shot. The Golden Grizzlies finished the match with an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.

On the opposite end, IPFW did not manage a shot on goal in the second half, but came close to scoring on a corner kick when an Oakland defender deflected the ball back towards goal, forcing a quick reaction save from Berschbach to parry the ball over the bar.

Berschbach finished the match with one save, as she earned her second shutout of the year. Krysta Hedrick was the busier of the two goalkeepers making seven saves for the Mastodons.

The Golden Grizzlies resume play on Friday with a 7 p.m. Summit League match against South Dakota at the OU Soccer Field. OU will also host UMKC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
