VERONA, N.Y. - Sophomore Jakob Ziegler ran away from the field with a final score of 1-under-par 215, shooting a final round 71 and finished six shots clear of anyone else, to lead the Oakland University men's golf team to an eighth-place finish (307-314-301/922) at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday at the Kaluhyat Golf Course (Par 72, 7,100 yards). Sophomore transfer Phil Gieseker joined Ziegler with a 1-under-par score of 71 in the third round.
"I am excited for Jakob," said OU coach Brian Costello. "He works so hard on his game and it is nice to see it all come together at a tournament of this caliber. As a team we are really close. We just need to get it going and we will be tough to beat. We will have three weeks to get some things worked out and we will be ready for the DePaul tournament."
Purdue won the tournament with an overall score of 897 (+33), three shots clear of tournament host Missouri's 900 (+36). Bowling Green rounded out the top three with a final tally of 903 (+39).
Ziegler (Berlin, Germany) is the first Golden Grizzly to win tournaments in back-to-back seasons since PGA Tour member Brian Stuard and Jon Pauli each won tournaments in 2004 and `05. He finished six shots ahead of the field with four players tied with 221.
Junior Michael Coriasso climbed the standings on the final day with an even-par 72 and finished with an overall score of 228 to finish in a tie for 18th place. Gieseker improved eight shots from round two to round three to climb in a tie for 20th place.
