Oakland Bounces Over UMKC

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Meghan Bray had 17 kills, junior Allison Bell had five blocks and sophomore Brittany Holbrook had eight kills and five blocks as the Oakland University volleyball team (8-7, 3-1 Summit) moved past UMKC (4-10, 1-4 Summit) 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-17) Friday evening.

"I thought we did really well tonight," said head coach Rob Beam. 'Defensively, we did a lot of moving through tips and our blocking was solid. Our offense was outstanding. We had great hitting efficieny and Meghan was a big part of that."

In the first set, Oakland and UMKC battled back-and-forth early on. A block by the Kangaroos' Elizabeth Beck and Demetria Williams tied the game at 6-6. Junior Ashley Nevelle then served 11 straight points to seal the game.

In the second set, Oakland took a 16-15 lead. UMKC scored six straight points to be on the verge of winning the set. The Golden Grizzlies battled back to tie the game at 22-22. The Kangaroos picked up a kill from Kelsey Knoche to go up 23-22. OU fought back getting a kill from junior Jenna Lange. Oakland then forced a hitting error and picked up a kill from Lange to end the set.

In the third set, OU stormed out to a 15-7 lead. The teams then traded points until a Kangaroo hitting error ended the match.

For Oakland, Nevelle paced the team with 29 assists and two service aces. Senior Brittany Dunn had 11 digs, her 14th double-digit performance of the season.

For UMKC, Knoche had 14 kills and three service aces while Ella Meier had 11 digs.

Oakland remains at home, Saturday, Sept. 25 taking on Southern Utah. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Live State will be available at www.ougrizzlies.com.
