Sept. 17, 2010

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore Meghan Bray had 20 kills and 14 digs and freshman Becca Means had a career-high 16 digs as the Oakland University volleyball team (6-7, 1-1 Summit) beat IUPUI (2-10, 1-2 Summit) 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) Friday night at the Jungle.

"I'm really proud of our team's defensive effort tonight," said head coach Rob Beam. "Our blockers and back court worked together very well. Meghan came through with a special performance tonight. She was outstanding in every phase of the game. We are looking forward to our match with Western Illinois tomorrow."

In the first set, neither team was able to pull rank over the other. Up 17-16, Oakland made an attempt to pull away with a kill from Bray and an attack error by IUPUI to make it 19-16. The Jaguars went on a 4-2 run ended by a kill from Lindsey Weber to make it 21-20, OU. Oakland scored four straight points, ending the set on a smash down the middle from Bray.

The second set followed the same format as the first. IUPUI forced a service error to take the lead at 18-17. OU came back with a block from sophomore Brittany Holbrook and junior Ashleigh Slemmer. The Golden Grizzlies would then go on a 7-2 run, closing the set on a spike from Bray.

In the third set, the Jaguars got a kill from Dana Gardner to make it 16-15, OU. Oakland closed the set on a 9-3 run. Just like the first two sets, this set and the match ended on a bomb from Bray.

For Oakland, Bray had just two errors in 43 attempts for a .419 hitting percentage while freshman Audrey Wilson added nine kills. Junior Ashley Nevelle spearheaded the offense with 37 assists.
