EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Meghan Bray and freshman Audrey Wilson had 10 kills each and junior Allison Bell had six block assists as the Oakland University volleyball team (5-7) lost 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17) to No. 29 Michigan State (7-3) Tuesday evening.
In the first set, the two squads battled on even terms. Wilson took a set from junior Ashley Nevelle and smashed it home to make it 8-6 Oakland. Michigan State responded by scoring 12 straight points to seal the set.
In the second set, the Spartans took an 17-9 lead and appeared to have things under control. The Golden Grizzlies refused to quit. They closed to 21-18 and senior Brittany Dunn stepped up and served three points to tie the match at 21-21.
MSU got a kill by Megan Schatzle to go up 22-21. Wilson then blasted the ball into the right corner to make it 22-22. Oakland scored the next three points, including the set-winning block by Bell and junior Katie Horling.
In the third set, once again the two teams stood toe-to-toe. Sophomore Jillian Kulka served up an ace to make it 15-13, Michigan State. The Spartans then closed the set on a 10-3 run.
In the fourth set, MSU had an early 13-8 lead. Oakland got a kill from Wilson and another block from Bell and Horling to make it 13-10. Michigan State settled themselves down and outscored the Golden Grizzlies 12-7 to take the match.
For Oakland, they had a solid blocking night with one solo block and 18 block assists for a total of 10 team blocks. Leading in block assists were Bell with six, Horling with five and junior Jenna Lange with four. Dunn had 14 digs, her 11th double-digit match of the season.
For Michigan State, Schatzle had 14 kills, Kyndra Abron had 11 while Alexis Matthews recorded 10. Becca Zlabis collected 19 digs.
Oakland remains on the road taking on IUPUI, Friday, Sept. 17. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
