Oakland Women's Soccer Falls to Western Michigan, 2-0

Aug. 27, 2010

Box Score

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior goalkeeper Shannon Coley had five saves, but it was not enough for the Oakland women's soccer team, which suffered its first defeat of the season 2-0 to Western Michigan at the WMU Soccer Complex on Friday. The Broncos improve to 2-0, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 1-1.

"It was a disappointing loss," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "Especially to give up goals on two set plays is frustrating, because it was an area that we worked on for most of the winter and preseason. Overall our commitment level to the team was not up to the standard we expect at Oakland. "

Oakland nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Kara Weber headed a shot on goal that was saved by the Western Michigan goalkeeper, Julia Francy. Shortly thereafter, WMU took the lead courtesy of an Oakland own goal in the 10th minute. The Broncos' Brittney Pavlic sent a cross into the area was headed by an OU defender past Coley and into the goal to give the hosts the early lead.

The Broncos made it 2-0 in the 37th minute when Nicole Dulyea volleyed in a goal from a corner kick. Caitlin Henderson sent in a cross from the corner kick that went to Alison Szczypka, who headed it to Dulyea.

Coley was forced into action on several occasions, as the Broncos had a 13-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Francy finished with three saves for WMU in the shutout effort.

"We had a few players that did well, especially some of our freshmen," said O'Shea. "We'll look to improve on some of the areas where we were lacking today and move on from here."

Oakland will look to rebound on Sunday with an away match against Pittsburgh (1-1). For fans that are unable to attend the match, live stats will be available on OUgrizzlies.com.
