KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior Marisa Everitt struck out nine batters and sophomore Kylie Schalz registered the Golden Grizzlies' lone hit of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Oakland University softball team (17-35, 7-14 Summit League) dropped a 2-0 decision to UMKC (22-26, 12-10 Summit League) in their series finale Saturday at Loyola Park.
The Kangaroos struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Chelsea Hart hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the runner on third to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Oakland had strong opportunity to put up some runs in the fifth inning when, after senior Haley Emerson was walked, Schalz hit a single to left field and a subsequent sacrifice bunt by Everitt moved the runners to second and third base with one out. But pitcher Deanna Fries fanned the next two batters to end the threat and retire the side.
UMKC notched their other run off a solo shot home run in the sixth inning from Emily Ott to bring the game to what would become its 2-0 final score.
Everitt (5-12) was charged with the loss, after allowing two runs, both earned, and striking out nine batters. Fries (12-12) earned the win, pitching a shutout one-hitter and fanning 13 batters. The Golden Grizzlies had no runs off one hit with no errors, while UMKC scored two runs off six hits and also committed no errors.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude regular season play when they hit the road for a league series against IPFW on Sunday, May 9. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and can be followed via Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com.
