Oakland Drops Two on the Road

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior Alyssa Deacon, senior Katie Dreyer and sophomore Kelsey Krych had two hits each as the Oakland University softball team (7-13 Summit, 17-34) dropped a doubleheader, 7-2 and 9-0 to UMKC (11-10 Summit, 21-26) Friday afternoon at Loyola Park.

Oakland struck in its first at-bat. Deacon singled to right field and moved to second on a single by Dreyer. With the runners going, senior Haley Emerson laced a single to right center field, scoring Deacon and sending Dreyer to third. Sophomore Kylie Schalz singled to dead center field to score Dreyer making it 2-0.

UMKC used four hits to score three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead at 3-2. In the bottom of the third Betsy Hanley hit a grand slam home run to seal the deal.

Deacon and Dreyer both went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Junior Marisa Everitt (5-11) gave up seven hits, seven runs, all earned, walked three and struck out three batters in two innings.

For UMKC, Kelly Fische was 3-for-4 and Lindsey Davi was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in two runs. Anna Sokolik (10-8) gave up seven hits, two runs, both of them earned, walked one and struck out eight in seven innings.

In game two, the Golden Grizzlies could not get on track. In the fourth inning, Krych broke up the no-hit attempt laying down a bunt single. Sophomore Brittany Doyle (9-15) gave up 14 hits, nine runs, all earned, walked one and struck out two batters in four innings.

For UMKC, Deanna Fries (11-12) threw a two hitter and struck out 12 batters in five innings.

Oakland closes the series against UMKC with a single game on Saturday, May 8. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
