GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sophomore Brittany Doyle threw a seven hitter as the Oakland University softball team (4-7) split with Furman, Thursday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies won the first game 1-0 and lost the nightcap 6-5.
"It was an up and down day today," said head coach Glenn MacDonald. "Brittany threw a tough game in the opener. We played some good defense for her. In the night cap, we had some mental and physical mistakes which cost us the game. Marissa really threw a good game for us."
In game 1, in the sixth inning, junior Alyssa Deacon reached first on an error. Following two strikeouts, Deacon stole second. Sophomore Kelsey Krych singled through the left side to score Deacon and make it 1-0.
Krych went three-for-four, stole a base and drove in a run. Sophomore Brittany Doyle (3-3) threw a seven hitter with four strikeouts.
In game 2, Furman held a 4-0 lead after two innings. In the top of the third, with one out, Krych reached on an error and stole second. Freshman Erin Galloway doubled to left center to score Krych.
With two outs, senior Haley Emerson drew a walk. Sophomore Leah DiCristofaro singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw with Emerson and Galloway scoring. Junior Alyssa Deacon ripped a double to left field to score DiCristofaro and tie the game at 4-4.
A double from sophomore Kylie Schalz pushed Deacon across the plate for a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Paladins used two walks and two errors to score two runs to win the game.
DiCristofaro went two-for-three, scored a run and drove in two runs. Junior Marissa Everitt (0-2) gave up five hits, six runs, three of them earned and struck out eight batters.
Oakland will take on Lipscomb, Friday, Feb. 26 at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. The game is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
