ELMHURST, Ill. -The Oakland University's men's soccer team swept The Summit League's weekly awards as juniors Josh Bennett and Mitch Hildebrandt were named Summit League Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week respectively by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is the first time that Bennett has won the award, while it is the third weekly honor for Hildebrandt this season and the sixth of his career.
Bennett, a midfielder from Howell, Mich. scored the match-winning goal for Oakland in the team's 2-0 win over Centenary. The victory propelled the Golden Grizzlies into The Summit League Tournament as the No. 3 seed. It was Bennett's first career goal, as he became the 12th player to score a goal for Oakland this season.
Hildebrandt, had a busy week, recording eight saves in the Golden Grizzlies' 2-1 overtime loss to Detroit on Wednesday. The Livonia, Mich. native also made a pair of saves in the shutout win over Centenary. This season, the OU netminder has recorded a league-best four shutouts in league play and is also first in save percentage (.852) in league games. He is second in The Summit League in both saves (89) and shutouts (7) in all matches this season.
The Golden Grizzlies will face second-seeded IUPUI in the semifinals of The Summit League Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. Tickets to the match are just $5 for adults and $1 for students with a college ID. Children under two years old will be admitted for free.
