Oakland Races Past the Jaguars

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Meghan Bray had 14 kills and junior Ashley Nevelle delivered 41 assists as the Oakland University volleyball team (15-12, 10-5 Summit) swept IUPUI (7-21, 6-10 Summit) 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-23) Friday night at the Athletics Center O'Rena.

With Southern Utah losing to Oral Roberts, the Golden Grizzlies move into third place in the Summit League. OU has a one game lead over SUU, South Dakota State and Oral Roberts.

"I thought it was a very good win against a very good team," said head coach Rob Beam. "I thought our offense executed with precision tonight. The Jaguars served the ball well and they just make you play volleyball. Ashley did a really good job of directing our offense and getting the ball to our hitters."

In the opening set, Oakland came out firing and jumped to a 6-2 lead. IUPUI came back with a 10-5 run to take the lead 12-11. The Jaguars pushed the lead 19-16. The Golden Grizzlies got kills from Nevelle, freshman Audrey Wilson and an IUPUI error to tie the match at 19-19. The Jaguars refused to go quiet and moved to a 22-21 lead.

OU got a kill from Bray and a ball handling error from IUPUI to make it 23-22. Kalyse Reimbold came back with a bomb down the middle to make it 23-23. Oakland steadied itself and got a spike from Bray and an ace from junior Allison Bell to end the set.

In the second set, the Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 12-6 lead and never looked back. The Jaguars got as close as six, 20-14. Bray and junior Jenna Lange stuffed Bethany Fogler to take the set.

In the third set the teams battled to a 10-10 tie. OU went on a 4-1 run to lead 14-11 before IUPUI scored three straight points to make it 14-14. Oakland went on a 9-6 run to make it 23-20.

The teams traded kills to make it 24-21. The Jaguars got a kill from Reimbold and a service ace from Alexis Meeks to make it 24-23. Lange came in from the outside and smashed the ball cross court to end the match.

For Oakland, Bray had 14 kills and 10 digs, Lange had 11 kills and hit .526 while sophomore Brittany Holbrook had 10 kills and hit .562. Senior Brittany Dunn had 13 digs, her 24th straight double-digit performance. She now has 1,378 digs, 14th best in Summit League history. Nevelle added 12 digs while sophomore Alli Kirk had nine digs.

"Rob (Beam) did a great job of preparing us in practice," said Nevelle. "I just did exactly what he told me to do and it worked out."

For IUPUI, Reimbold had 15 kills, Shari Barnhart had 15 digs and Lauran Thompson had 11 digs.

Oakland is back in action, Nov. 6, taking on Western Illinois in the O'Rena. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and Live Stats can be found at http://www.ougrizzlies.com/
