Oakland coach Greg Kampe
We wanted this game and we wanted it early. We wanted to play a team that pressures the ball because we lost a four-year starter at the point, so we knew we were going to struggle on offense. I wanted to play someone who I knew would guard us right out of the gate and who better than Huggins. We got what we thought we were going to get, but I thought we did pretty good against their pressure in the second half.
Obviously, they shot the ball unbelievably in the first half, and a lot of that was uncontested off of our turnovers. I think they're a really good shooting team, but we probably gave them some really good looks. We're a pretty good team at our level and we can go 25-2 against teams on our level, and then get beat at the end of the year because when something goes bad, we don't know what our weaknesses are. These games expose our weaknesses and it's going to make us a better team.
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins
Well obviously we shot the ball really well in the first half, but we're going to be a work in progress. I've tried to press the importance of not taking plays off, but we continue to take plays off. When you take plays off at this level, someone scores or they did a great job and we just took way too many plays off.
K.J. is going to have games when he gets his 25 or 15 and there isn't any doubt about that. Greg (Kampe) is a good coach and they set up to do a good job on K.J. Hopefully the strength of our team will be that he can get nine and we will still win. That's a pretty good team and I think you saw how good (Keith) Benson was in the second half. We doubled him in the first half and in the second half I wanted our guys to learn how to guard, so we didn't double him as much.
There will be a very healthy competition for playing time with Casey (Mitchell), Pep (Dalton Pepper) and Jonnie (West). If one of them comes in and doesn't have a real good practice, they'll have a hard time getting playing time. We're going to spell John Flowers some with those guys and Joe (Mazulla) and Truck (Bryant) at point. We need to play with depth and hopefully you find someone who makes shots.
