ELMHURST, Ill. - Oakland University sophomore Kara Weber was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is the second time that the OU defender from Calgary, Alberta, Canada has won the award this season.
Weber had an assist on the opening goal of the Golden Grizzlies' 2-1 win over Western Illinois on Sunday, in a match that clinched at least a share of The Summit League regular-season title on Senior Day at the OU Soccer Field. The sophomore center back came forward on a corner kick and headed the ball back to junior Marlen Knoph for the opening goal of the match.
Defensively, Weber was at the center of an Oakland defense that allowed just five total shots to the Fighting Leathernecks. The OU defense held WIU to only one shot on goal, in the battle between the top two teams in the league.
Oakland also recorded a 2-0 win over IUPUI on Friday to finish the week undefeated. Against the Jaguars, Weber limited the conference's second-leading scorer, Megan Hock, to just two shots and no shots on goal. With Weber at the center of the backline, the Golden Grizzlies defense allowed just two shots on goal in the shutout victory.
The Golden Grizzlies finish the season on the road against Southern Utah and UMKC respectively. Oakland will clinch the outright regular-season championship and top seed at The Summit League Tournament with a win or a tie in either match.
