SHREVEPORT, La. - Sophomore Meghan Bray had 14 kills and junior Jenna Lange had 10 kills as the Oakland University volleyball team (13-12, 8-5 Summit) swept through Centenary (3-17, 0-12 Summit) 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-13) Saturday night at the Gold Dome.
"I'm very pleased with our play tonight," said head coach Rob Beam. "Centenary came out with a lot of energy and we had to fight to gain control of the match. I think our serve and serve receive game was key. We were able to take command by getting them out of system and conversely execute sharply on our side of the net with accurate passing."
The first set was an all-out battle with no team getting a lead bigger than two. Down 11-10, Centenary went on a 5-4 run to lead 16-14. Oakland came back with a kill from freshman Audrey Wilson and a Ladies attack error to make it 16-16.
The teams traded points before a Golden Grizzly hitting error make it 18-17, Centenary. Bray blasted the ball through three defenders to start a run of five straight points that effectively ended the set.
The last two sets were similar in nature. Oakland stormed out to a 14-3 lead in the second and 14-7 in the third to take control. Bray blasted the ball off a block in the third set to end the match.
For Oakland, Bray hit .344 and had two service aces while Lange hit .429 and recorded four blocks. Junior Allison Bell, sophomore Brittany Holbrook and junior Ashley Nevelle had three blocks a piece. Senior Brittany Dunn had 10 digs, her 22nd straight double-digit performance.
For Centenary, Hurlbirt and Bethany Kern had eight kills each while Taylor Gilmour had 12 digs.
Oakland is off until Friday, Oct. 29 when they take on IPFW, the Summit League leader. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
